DENVER GUIDE
Why a Denver house dries out when the heat runs
Static snaps off a blanket, the piano feels tight, and the furnace has been running since the first hard night. Indoor dryness here is outdoor air that was already dry, then heated. A humidifier is a topic you can discuss. It is not a product this page will rank, and it is not proof the air conditioner is low on refrigerant.
The air outside was already dry
Winter air along the Front Range does not arrive full of moisture. When that air leaks in, or is brought in by ventilation, and then a furnace or heat pump heats it, the relative humidity indoors falls. The house feels drier even though nobody removed a bucket of water on purpose.
A drafty brick house and a tight newer one get there differently. Capitol Hill brick may exchange air with the outside all day, so indoor moisture leaves and dry air replaces it. A tighter Central Park house may hold what moisture you add, and then show the extra on cold glass. Neither pattern is a refrigerant symptom. The equipment overview helps you name the heater. The humidity behavior follows from that and from how tight the shell is.
Check the weather when you are tempted to blame the furnace brand. A cold, dry outbreak and a mild, slightly moister week will not feel the same indoors. The National Weather Service tells you the outdoor picture. This page will not quote a target indoor percentage.
What the heating system adds to the story
A gas furnace raises the temperature of air that passed through the heat exchanger. It does not add moisture unless a humidifier is attached and actually running. A boiler heats water in pipes and radiators. The air still dries if the house is full of heated, infiltrating winter air, but you will not find a furnace pad on a radiator system. Say which you have before you buy a part for the wrong machine.
A heat pump's long runtime heats the same dry air for more hours. Static in January is often the season plus that runtime. Backup heat, electric or gas, warms air too. None of that is a charge measurement. Do not answer dryness by opening a refrigerant port.
Fan set to on all night stirs air and can make surfaces feel cooler, which changes how dry the room seems. A schedule with a deep setback and a hard morning recovery changes comfort in a different way. Sort the thermostat before you sort a humidifier. The heater has to be the one you think it is.
Summer is a different complaint
Cooling season in Denver is still not a Gulf story. The outdoor air is often dry, sun is strong, and an air conditioner that fails usually fails at temperature and airflow. The air conditioner not cooling page is that symptom. An air conditioner does remove some moisture as a side effect of a cold coil. If the house will not cool, fix the cooling complaint. Do not describe a bright, dry afternoon as a humidity emergency.
A condensate drain that clogs is water the coil did pull from indoor air. A pan overflow or a ceiling stain under an air handler is a drain problem. It can happen here without the city being humid. Water where it should not be, and rooms that feel parched in January, are different complaints.
Wildfire smoke is an air question of another kind. Check AirNow before you open windows to 'freshen' a dry house. The filter still matters. This page will not quote an index.
Humidifiers as a topic, not a catalog
Some houses have a humidifier on the supply plenum that runs only when the blower runs. Some people use a portable unit in a bedroom. Steam units, bypass units, and fan-powered units are categories, not a ranking. This guide will not name a best model, a brand to prefer, or a size to buy. If you already have one, the useful questions are whether it runs, whether the pad or cylinder is scaled shut, and where the water goes when it drains.
A humidifier that never runs may be switched off, wired only to heat, or stuck because the furnace itself is not running. Confirm heat first. A humidifier that runs without the blower moving air can dump moisture in the cabinet. Do not force the fan with a jumper to prove a point.
Overdoing it shows up on the glass. Cold windows and storm panes will stream or frost if you add more moisture than that surface can hold on a sharp night. Wipe and turn the humidifier down or off. Pooled water on wood and stained drywall are the practical limit.
Care that is not a sales visit
If the manual you still have says the pad is replaceable and shows how it slides out, that is house care in the same family as a furnace filter. Match what is installed. If the unit is a sealed steam cylinder or a plumbing connection you do not understand, leave it. Scale and standing water are why neglected humidifiers smell. They are also why a dirty one is a poor answer to dryness.
Do not pipe a humidifier drain to a place you have not identified. A hose that ends in a bucket you forget is a spill. A hose that ties into a furnace condensate trap can back up into equipment if the trap is already slime-filled. Ask before you join those drains.
Portable units need to be filled with the water the manufacturer allows and emptied when the season says so. Do not leave a tank sitting full through a warm week and then complain about the smell in October. A portable unit also does not fix a whole brick house. It can make one room more comfortable while you decide whether the central equipment deserves a look.
When dryness is not the emergency
No heat, a gas smell, or a carbon monoxide alarm outrank a scratchy nose. The no-heat emergency page is the sort for a falling house temperature. A humidifier is not a heater. Do not run a grill, an oven, or a kettle on a gas burner all night to 'put moisture back' while the furnace is off. Boiling water does not make a closed kitchen safe, and combustion in that kitchen can make carbon monoxide.
Adding a whole-house humidifier can mean sheet metal, a water line, a drain, and a control on the furnace. That may be a small accessory or a scope the city wants to hear about, depending on what else changes. Ask Denver Community Planning and Development if the work alters the heating appliance or adds plumbing and electrical you cannot describe as a plug-in. The permits page is the reminder that Aurora, Lakewood, and Arvada do not use Denver's counter. This page does not invent a permit trigger.
Tell a technician the season, the glass, and whether a humidifier is already installed. Ask them to separate dryness from a real heating or cooling fault. If the only finding is 'the air is dry because it is winter and the heat is on,' that is a complete finding. You do not owe anyone a new system for it.
Questions about indoor humidity
Why does the house feel drier after the heat comes on?
Outdoor winter air here is already dry. Heating it lowers the relative humidity indoors, whether the machine is a furnace, a boiler heating the rooms indirectly, or a heat pump running long hours. The equipment did not have to 'remove' a measured bucket of water. The temperature change is enough to change how the air feels.
Is dryness a sign I need refrigerant?
No. Refrigerant charge is about cooling performance, measured with gauges, not about static electricity in January. Dry air is the climate plus heating. If cooling is also failing in summer, that is a separate complaint. Do not open a service port because the bedroom feels parched.
What humidity number should I aim for?
This page will not give you one. A single target ignores how cold the windows are and how tight the house is. If glass is streaming or frosting, you are adding more moisture than that night can hold. If you feel no benefit and the windows are dry, the humidifier may not be running. Use those observations instead of a borrowed percentage.
Should I buy a whole-house humidifier?
This guide will not tell you to. If you already have one, find out whether it runs with the blower and whether the pad or cylinder is scaled shut. If you do not, a portable unit in one room is a way to learn what moisture does to your glass before anyone cuts into ductwork. Ask about permits if the job changes the heating appliance.
Can I boil water on the stove all night to humidify?
No. An unattended burner is a fire and carbon monoxide risk, and it is a poor humidity plan. Use a humidifier you can see and shut off, or leave dryness alone until morning. If the real problem is no heat, follow the emergency notes rather than turning the kitchen into a steam room.
